Outdoor Gear Reviews

Outdoor Walking and Camping Gear Reviews
Read all the latest Mud and Routes outdoor gear reviews, both walking and camping, split into handy sub categories for your convenience.

Our outdoor gear reviews include almost anything that has an outdoor slant, from waterproof jacket reviews and boot reviews, to outdoor tech and walking pack reviews, we’ve got you covered.

We always review outdoor gear honestly and we strongly believe in testing in proper conditions, on the hill, usually in Snowdonia, not on the side of some grassy car park. We prefer to review fewer items, in more detail, with the exception of anything edible.

Lightload Towels Review

The Lightload Towels come in various sizes, with the size reviewed being the 30x60cm towels that are supplied in packs of three for £5.99. These are quite expensive at first glance, but they are a particularly tough towel that can be reused on numerous trips rather than being disposable. While this means that while they’re […]

Amazonas Tarp Hat Review

Ok, so I can’t write to a deadline. I’m also too busy in the hills half the time to get typing, so that’s why this review is being posted just as you’re likely to be thinking more about woolly bobble hats than a summer hat. However, not being ones to follow convention, here’s my opinion

Helinox Chair One Review

Last year, in a post on Luxury Wild Camping, one thing we couldn’t sort out was a chair. Now with the Helinox Chair One we can finally live the dream! I’ll admit that this is probably a sign of getting soft/old, but I really don’t care if it means that I can get a proper sit

DSP Magic Coin Towels

Unscented baby wipes have been an essential on all my trips, being used for anything from wiping up spills, cleaning pots and as a softer alternative to sphagnum moss when needed. They can be reasonably heavy, so these DSP Magic Coin Towel dry wipes to which you add water are an interesting alternative. The DSP Magic

More Mile London Running Socks

Socks are, as I always say when reviewing socks, something that I begrudge paying for. I might be happy enough shelling out hundreds of quid for the latest tech, but I’ll baulk at shelling out more than a few quid for socks. With my previous Karrimor socks were both wearing thin and disappearing, with only

7 Day Good To Go AA Batteries

All the good intentions in the world don’t count for anything when you’re fumbling in the dark to change batteries for your head-torch, only to find that those rechargeables have gone flat since you last used them. Since then, I’m ashamed to say that I’ve been using chuckable batteries as my spare batteries as i

Tesco Free From Instant Porridge

Having recently discovered that I’ve a gluten intolerance, it seemed that most of my chosen breakfasts were unsuitable. This instant porridge from Tesco is both gluten and dairy free and packing a 180 calories per pot, would be ideal. It’s also in a cardboard pot, which can be recycled as clearly anyone who has a

HiTec Zuuk Review

Every now and then, you come across one of those bits of kit you never knew you actually needed, let alone merely wanted. The Hi-Tec Zuuks are one such item. They’re superlightweight shoes that are just what you need to carry when you’re actually travelling as well as backpacking. That is, for something to wear

Alpkit Airlok Drybag Review

Exped have long been the first port of call for reliable drybags, with many alternative offerings not quite good enough. The Airloks from direct sellers Alpkit however go some way to redressing that balance. The Alpkit Airloks are a lightweight drybag, which means they’re not designed to be as durable as your typical drybag, and
