An Caisteal
An Caisteal is a summit in the region or range in Scotland. An Caisteal is 995 metres high. All the walking routes up An Caisteal on Mud and Routes can be found below. The top can be identified by the cairn. Other Notes: .
Along with the Wainwrights in the Lake District, the Munros of Scotland are probably the best known of the hill bagger’s tick lists and is arguably a pastime in itself: Munro Bagging. That should come as no surprise as the Munros include the absolute royalty of UK Mountians. While there’s obviously Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, there are many others that are much less popular but some of the best walking and scrambling you’ll find. The list includes some of the hardest mountains in the UK on the Cullin on Skye ( Sgurr Alistair) and on the Aonach Eagach ridge above Glen Coe, both of which require proper mountaineering skils as opposed to hill walking with sections of serious scrambling. The Inn Pinn – on Sgurr Dearg on Skye is a full on climb, so you cannot complete the Munros without resorting to mountain climbing.
Other mountains are more ameanable to the hill walker, but are still tough walks such as The Mamores, The Grey Corries and Torridon to name far too few.
There are 282 Munro Summits, supplemented by 227 Munro Tops. Most walks will include a couple of Munros, and a couple of tops if you’re lucky. However those looking to bag some serious Munros can start off with the South Glen Shiel Ridge (7 Munros, the highest of which is Sgurr an Doire Leathain at 1010 metres high) or even The Grey Corries which boast an impressive 4.
The Munros do face some serious competition from Scotland’s other hill list – The Corbetts. Whilst they may be less lofty by definition, they’re often more rugged and harder as they see fewer walkers making the paths fainter and harder to follow.
According to Wikipedia:
The Munros are mountains in Scotland over 3,000 feet (914.4 m). The list was originally compiled by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891, and is modified from time to time by the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC). Unlike most other lists, the Munros do not depend on a rigid prominence criterion for entry; instead, those that satisfy the subjective measure of being a “separate mountain” are regarded as Munros, while subsidiary summits are given the status of Munro Tops. There are 282 Munros, and 227 further Munro Tops, totalling 509 summits, all of them in the Scottish Highlands.
The Munros are Defined as:
Summits over 3,000ft in Scotland as defined on the Munro tables. There is no hard definition of reascent, and as such it is usually those that meet the subjective criterion of being a “separate mountain” that are included.
Our list below includes every walk on Mud and Routes up the Munros. We’re adding more routes on a weekly basis.
You can sort these to show the Munros by Mountain Range or Region as well as alphabetically – we’ll be adding a filter soon, as well as the ability for logged in users to ‘bag a summit’ and a Munro Map.
