If you’ve got an hour, and you want a quick circular walk from Keswick then the viewpoint of Castlehead is perfect. It’s the kind of  easy Lake District walk you can fit in on a Friday evening when you arrive in Keswick, allowing you to view all the surrounding mountains that you’ll hopefully walk up tomorrow.

The walk sets off from Moot Hall in the town centre, along a road initially, before you leave tarmac behind and climb the 70m or so up to the summit of Castlehead. There’s even an identification plate on the summit to allow you to identify the nearby summits, ideal for getting your bearings and impressing your mates the next day as you rattle off all the hill names. Mountains aren’t the only landmarks, with Derwentwater, and the only ‘lake’ in the Lake District – Bassenthwaite Lake, and the view across the town of Keswick.

The walk then descends to Derwentwater and the landing stages, and passes the Theatre by the Lake and through Hope Park as you return back to the start in the centre of Keswick.
