Winter Skills – Attaching your Axe to your Pack

To some of you, this may well be stating the obvious but if you’re ready for your first trip out in the snow with a group and you’ve packed your flask and sandwiches. Then you’ve a pack in one hand and an axe in the other and you realise you haven’t a clue how to attach it.

Simply thread the shaft of the axe down through the loops at the base of your pack – the ice axe loops – twist, lift and attach to a velcro strap or bungee that you should find above. I remember being rather stumped the first time around and while it’s bleedin’ obvious once you’ve seen it, it isn’t first time around!
