Whitfield Gill Force and Mill Gill from Askrigg

A nice easy walk from Askrigg if you happen to be in the Wensleydale area of the Yorkshire Dales with an hour or so to spare… Would make a decent trail run as well.

The Route

It’s easy enough to follow this one! Heading north out of the village of Asgrigg past the Crown, head uphill for about half a kilometre before turning left onto a good track that’s marked Low Straights Lane on the map and is signposted Whitfield Gill.

Follow this for a kilometre and a half and you’ll find another signpost into a field to the left that you’ll need to follow. It’s a pleasantly narrow path that descends to the Gill, though you’ll see very little until you cross the beck at the lower falls and follow the opposite bank to Whitfield Gill Force  (image link).

The path back down to the village is again signposted, and while there’s a little confusion at where the path splits four ways  – with Helm and Askrigg via Low Straight Lane being on the signpost, but the route via Mill Gill isn’t (SD936 917). At this point, cross the wall via the gap and the path should be obvious, keeping Whitfield Beck far below  to your left. Mill Gill Force is signposted and worth visiting (image link) though we missed it off our trip today.
