Respect the Mountains embark on new adventure

KEEN and Respect the Mountains embark on new adventure as UIAA acquires mountain preservation campaign‏

The UIAA, (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation), have announced the extension of its activities in mountain preservation through the recent addition of the Respect the Mountains campaign.

For those who are not aware, Respect the Mountains has over the last ten years been raising awareness through it’s seven cardinal rules: book smart; travel wise; support sustainable practices; be a respectful and responsible mountain tourist; ‘leave no trace’; reduce, reuse, recycle & upcycle (RRRU) and spread the word.

“Adding Respect the Mountains to our range of activities is a significant step,” explained UIAA President Frits Vrijlandt, “the project will be aligned to our long-established commitment to mountain protection. We actively encourage our member federations to organise Respect the Mountains initiatives in their respective territories.”

You may remember Mud and Routes brought you the news that Respect the Mountians organised the Envirotrek series which visted Llanberis in May this year. The UK also hosted events in the Lake District and Peak District, as part of a Europe wide initiative collecting litter form our mountain and nature areas. Keep an aye out over the coming months for the announcement on the 2016 program of activity.

Alongside the UIAA, and continuing it’s long term support of Respect the Mountains will be outdoor footware brand KEENWho have proven a tireless supporter of good causes.

Perry Laukens, KEEN Marketing Director EMEA, commented: “KEEN is excited about the new direction of Respect the Mountains and we hope that with the help of the UIAA we can help raise the voice of Respect the Mountains to make sure that more people keep our playgrounds clean and learn about the seven ways to reduce our impact, whilst building a sustainable future.”

Mud and Routes are certainly behind this campaign, and if you’re interested in any more info, or want to get involved go to the Respect the Mountains website.

siI’m a Welshman born and raised in the shadow of Snowdonia, and you could say the Mountains are in my blood with a name like Tryfan! I would class myself as a relative newcomer to the outdoor pursuits arena, and so my articles will be my attempt to chronicle my adventures, hopefully learning as I go and giving those that are in a similar boat an insight / forum to share and learn.
