AmazonBasics Holster DSLR Camera Case
Carrying a small compact camera in the hills is a doddle, whack it in a drybag and then your pocket. Sorted. Not so with a DSLR, especially once you couple it with a serious wide angle lens such as the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 DX Lens – or any serious telephoto lens. Offerings from the likes of LowePro, while being quality kit, and not guaranteed to fit my set up made it an expensive gamble. So when I spotted the AmazonBasics Holster DSLR Camera Case for just shy of £15, this looked promising even if it didn’t quite end up being large enough.
It turned out to be more than sufficient! It swallows my Canon D600 DSLR with the huge Tokina Super Wide Angle Lens attached – or 300mm Cannon Zoom. and you might just squeeze a pancake lens in the bottom if you’re lucky! There’s a hard base, to protect the camera when you put it down, and the case itself is reasonably well padded.
There are loads of side pockets which are useful for batteries and a few odds and sods (filter adapter rings, lens cleaning pen, memory cards). The main compartment has a couple of adjustable ‘hangers’ for your camera – so that the lens falls in between in order to suspend the camera and protect it from knocks, but the petals on my lens kept getting caught in them and so they have been pushed to one side as they’re adjustable. So my camera just sits in there, and it’s been fine so far.
It isn’t waterproof, so you will need to wrap your camera in a drybag if it’s looking dodgy, or perhaps wrap the lot as you wouldn’t want your lens wipes or batteries getting wet either. Some bags come with a rain-cover, but I think they cause as much problems as they solve.
The clips are a nasty plastic that might well be strong enough for a camera, but that remains to be seen. I wouldn’t have expected these to have been metal at this price range, but they’re still a potential weakness. I’ve also had a small section of seam begin to unravel after 9 months, although it’s cosmetic at this stage rather than structural and It should be OK after an emergency repair. You can just about see it near the zip to the left of the next image.
It’s also useful for carrying wide angle lens while the camera is on my shoulder in a neoprene case.
Despite the few issues I’ve mentioned, this is a cracking bit of kit for £15 and worth every penny. I’d be more than happy to pay extra for metal clips and buckles
