Aran Fawddwy is the under-rated hill of Mid Wales. 12metres taller than it’s more illustrious neighbour, Cader Idris (technically Penygadair), but virtually hidden from the south. You can see it from Llyn Tegid in the north.

The Hirnant hills are a heather clad expanse to the east of Aran, which can be reached without dropping below 500m. The same can be said of the Berwyn, which are joined to the whole at another high pass. It’s arguable as to the best way of dividing these mountains, and the decision lies down to their position mainly within the National Park.
