UCO Micro Candle Lantern Review

When camping, candles give off a comforting glow and add atmosphere to a tent. Yet, we hadn’t used a candle while camping for years. We’d tried a few tea-lights, placed in a metal mug, but with little success. There’s also the fire risk from regular candles as well as the difficulty of getting them lit in anything but pure calm. So a candle lantern that should be safe, effective and still provide that warm lighting you can only get with candles, seemed worth a shot.

The UCO Micro candle lantern is still light enough to take on a wild camp, if not the lightest option, and collapses down to take up even less space. You can also store a spare candle in the base, which should be fine for a couple of days out.

It can be a bit fiddly to light in a breeze, but once lit, it should remain lit even if there’s a stiff breeze. As an added bonus, you could try burning citronella tealights in order to keep those midges away.

The lantern provides as much light as you’d expect from a tea-light so you won’t be reading to this light. For those late evenings chatting in the tent, there’s more than enough illumination once your eyes adjust. We’d also only use this in a large tent. While the top plate gets hot, you can safely pass your hand over the top, and so will hang safely. However, there’s just not enough space in smaller tents, and it might also get close to the side wall. However, in our winter tent, or the porch, then it seems perfectly fine to use.

While there are both cheaper and more practical options for lighting in a tent, this is by far the most comforting option that’s ideal for when you only need light for sipping a wee dram and chatting.
