A New Mountain For Snowdonia?

While there’s been talk recently of mountains that are already 609m high mountains, being slightly taller 609m mountains, It’s about time we got to the bottom of some real news.

You see, we’re talking here about a couple of NEW 600m summits in Snowdonia, and with 50m reascent, they’re no mere bumps on the side of a larger hill.

I’ve noticed this back in August 2008 on the now defunct Walk Eryri Blog which can still be seen on the Wayback Machine here. Planning a walk this weekend in Southern Snowdonia, I took a look at the 1:40k Mountain Map and sure enough, there’s two 600m ring contours plain as day atop Clip and Craig Drwg. There’s not much re-ascent between them, so in reality we’ve got a twin peak until someone proves which is the taller of the two.

Somewhere on this map lies a new Snowdonia Mountain….

To check it yourself, you”ll need to look at the 1:25 Rhinogydd map or the 1:40k BMC Mountain Maps by Harvey”s. Find SH654329 or SH656331, and you”ll notice two 600m ring contours. This means That both Clip and Craig Ddrwg are 600m summits until someone can either prove one higher than the other, or prove Harvey’s wrong.

For what it’s worth, I used a regular GPS on the summit of Craig Drwg during a walk up Moel Ysgyfarnogod and Craig Drwg From Trawsfynydd – and this is what I noted:

Craig Drwg – Now this summit has been one I’d wanted to visit as the Harvey’s Maps place a 600m contour on the summit. The OS only reckons it’s 596m high. While my GPS seemed content with 603m. This isn’t concrete proof that this really is a new ‘mountain’ for Snowdonia, but it should hopefully spur someone … to survey this top.

Clip – Yet more descent and a steep ascent sees you on top of Clip, another top that Harvey show as 600m, but only registered as 596m on my GPS.

So taking into account that my GPS isn’t particularly accurate, does anyone with the right kit fancy taking this challenge on? Or is it just a typo..
