True Mountain Stretch Sportwool Long Sleeve Review

We’ve used this Stretch Sportswool long sleeved base layer by True Mountain extensively for running over the winter months as well as a base-layer for full on winter conditions, and this is how it fared in our long term review.

True Mountain are an outdoor clothing company who produce all their kit in the UK, which is a novelty to start with, ensuring that you’re buying reasonably locally. In their own words:

True Mountain is a brand that produces performance outdoor apparel in the UK (Preston, Lancashire if you want to be exact). We only use materials and components sourced in the EU, and as much as possible comes from the UK.

While the fit might be advertised as ‘athletic’, but don’t let that put you off if you’re carrying a bit more meat than a butcher’s knife. There’s still plenty of room in these tops, so you won’t need to go a size up. Arms are also sufficiently long, as is the length. We’ve lost count of the tops where the arms are too short (one where we couldn’t use the thumb-loops and retain blood flow to the hand) and the torso is so short that it’s more of a crop top.

As the base layer is made of sportwool fabric ( 61% Polyester / 36% Merino Wool, 3% Elastane ) – the merino makes it very soft. This along with the flat-lock seams meant it was comfortable and no chafage. We also found it performed quite well without washing the first few times – ideal if you’re looking to use it for backpacking.

We’re also big thumbloop fans at Mud and Routes, something we think are essential in the colder months. We know you can use gloves, but thumb-loop often removes the need for them, and are also an extra bit of insulation for when you do wear gloves and need to remove them.

They also provide a lifetime guarantee, though we found the kit is well made and after many months of abuse, is still going strong, and you probably won’t need it. Overall, this is a decent mountain base-layer for the warmer months, whether you’re running, walking or mountaineering.
