Thieves have it away with Ancient Path Pillar

It appears that nothing is safe! The BBC reported today that the stone pillar on the old track between Rhiwlas and Mynydd Llandygai has been half inched, and police are keen to trace the owner of a white 4×4 vehicle which was seen driving along the path towards Rhiwlas at about 3pm on Saturday 31stJanuary.

This was the pillar in full glory a few years ago, and was a feature on this walking route around Moel Lyci, which turned out not too be too Lyci afterall.

North Wales Police stated:

PCSO 3622 Iwan Owen said: “This slate pillar is large and heavy, its dimensions being  7’ tall by 2’ wide by 2’ in depth.”

“Historically this pillar marked the border of the old wards of Penrhyn and Faenol and has been in place for at least a century. It has a symbolic importance to the local community, who are enraged by this theft.”

He added:  “A vehicle would had to have been used to remove the pillar and it is likely that this would have been stolen to fit a particular demand  – possibly  purchased or installed by someone quite innocently.”

Police are keen to trace the owner of a white 4×4 vehicle which was seen driving along the path towards Rhiwlas at about 3pm on Saturday 31stJanuary.

PCSO Owen added: “I would be interested to hear if anyone has had a large slate piece installed recently or is due to have one installed.”

It’s not very often the police ask the public to keep an eye out for a suspicious inglenook…
