Smart Budget LED Red Light

It’s that time of year again, when you need to be a little more visible during those twilight runs and cycles. The Smart Red LED light is a multipurpose clip on light that you can use both running and cycling. I find that clipping a rear light onto my bike can be difficult owing to the pannier rack and mudguard, so a clip-on light is just the ticket as you can attach this to just about anything. It’s possible to clip it to the rear of your head torch, but i found it took a bit of getting used to up there.

The clip is tight enough to ensure the light stays on while you’re running, and the whole light feels sturdy enough. You can also attach it to your bike with a tough looking clip if you don’t want it clipped to your waist. Thankfully, the battery change is by levering the front off with a coin as opposed to having to find a screwdriver, but is still a little bit fiddly. As a bonus, considering the price, the light comes with two AAA batteries. This means you can use the light immediately, as well as using it with rechargeables.

Operation is so easy that even a Mac owner could manage the one button operation 😉 Press it to cycle from Off – On – Flash and a KITT style Knight Rider effect as the LEDs light in a sequence from side to side. More importantly, the light it emits is bright and you shouldn’t have any difficulty being seen under normal conditions. It’s certainly more visible than small clip on runner’s lights.

The light costs around a fiver with postage, depending where you buy it and is fully waterproof. If you’re concerned about safety during the dark winter months, or want to keep your cycling legal, then it’s probably the best fiver you’ll spend this winter. It only loses stars as I don’t think it’s as durable as it could be, especially when removing the front cover, and may well only last a season or two.
