Sealskinz Versatility Gloves Review

With the impending winter and the already fierce autumn fully with us, you’ll need to start layering up again. I find that gloves have always been a little problematic at this time of year as the thinner gloves tend not to be waterproof and bulky winter gloves are overkill. The Sealskinz Versatility glove doesn’t appear to be one of their more popular gloves and not always stocked, but fills the middle ground between winter and thinner gloves.

They have a goat skin leather palm that provides decent grip whether you’re walking or cycling and for that purpose they make an ideal all-purpose glove. The velcro fastenings on the wrist means that they close securely to minimise water ingress, just remember to fasten your jacket sleeve over the glove. The remainder of the glove is porelle which is both waterproof and breathable. Being reasonably thin, you’ll find that you can perform most tasks with the gloves on, including delicate compass work. Every time you have to remove gloves, you end up with colder hands and if it’s raining you’re putting wet hands back into the glove and before long you start thinking they let in water. Much better to wear a layer that you can keep on for most of the day and remain comfortable, whether that’s a base-layer or glove.

A final touch is that the gloves can be fastened together so that you don’t lose them either on the move, or end up having to empty out half your pack in order to find the other glove (only to find it fell out in the boot).

There are better gloves out there that are designed specifically for mountain biking, but if you want a pair of gloves that are a good all rounder you won’t go far wrong with these. They’re available in multiple sizes and gender specific deisgns.

Summary: Multipurpose waterproof glove that’s just what you need this time of year. They’re comfortable and thin enough to do most tasks. But you might be better off with a more padded glove for mountain biking.
