Warden Hill circuit – Somersby to Tetford and back

This is a footpath walk that takes you on a circuit from Somersby, over and around Warden Hill before following the path of a roman road to Tetford and your lunch stop. Returning via more bridleways and only a short proportion on the road. One of the things that struck me was how well kept and waymarked the footpaths were, something I hadn’t expected.

The Route Start off at the church in Somersby, and at the road junction nearby, take the fork for Tetford.

Follow the road for a short while before taking the obvious track to the right up the hill. The path is very well waymarked, and you should find it very straightforward. It pulls uphill initially before flattening out towards Wardenhill farm. Pass between the farmhouse and some outbuildings, and then left along the track.

Following the waymarks, the track turns right along the field edge and you can see down left into the dry valley into which you’ll be passing next.

Again, there’s a sign, and the bridleway heads left downhill before regaining the height. The obvious track here continues left to the trig on Warden Hill, but isn’t a right of way, so we continued along the bridleway right. Again, following the field edge along the woods. At the end of this field, you join a good path between high hedges and turning left on this takes you, steeply at one point, to the road.

Don’t follow the bridleway that’s obvious on the opposite side of the road, but follow the road left for approx. 100m. There’s a footpath to your right and if you follow this for 200m or so, it soon turns left and follows the line of a Roman road. That means that it keeps going in a roughly straight direction and is very easy to follow, waymarked thoroughly and is pretty well kept overall.

Following this for a kilometre and a half, you arrive at the church and graveyard, that you pass through and are now in Tetford. This is a small village, but has an excelent pub (White Hart) a Tearoom (seasonal) and a shop somewhere that we were unable to find. After a few pints and lunch in the pub, you can continue right from the pub and again right a few 100m down the road at the public footpath that passes the ponds.

At the end, turn right and after a short distance left between some houses and then on past some newer houses. A simple right on the road and a left brings you to the Cross Keys Inn in Salmonby, where you can stop again if you’re still thirsty. The bridleway you need is just to the side of the pub.

It’s a steady path, with only one junction to deal with. Where there’s a footpath junction, keep on the bridleway right. Following the field boundary, you’re heading for the edge of the small wood and the lane.
Finally, follow the lane for about a kilometre to finish the walk and arrive at where you started from.
