The Precipice Walk – Llwybr Cynwch – Near Dolgellau

The Precipice Walk, or Llwybr Cynwch, near Dolgellau is one of the very best easy circular walks in Snowdonia. The walk dates back to Victorian times, when the walk was probably described as being frightfully precipitous. However, this belies a much gentler walk that’s more of a ramble than the mountaineering expedition implied by the name.

The walk starts off on a minor road to the north of Dolgellau at the Saith Groesfordd Car Park (LL40 2NG). It brings you initially to the eastern end of the scenic mountain tarn of Llyn Cynwch, a hidden gem of a lake that’s only the first course of this walk. The path then heads north to contour around the minor hill of Foel Cynwch high above the Mawddach and the busy A470 far below. Ahead, there are extensive views down the Mawddach Estuary and over towards Cader Idris and the mountains of South Snowdonia. Finally, the route returns to skirt along the shores of Llyn Cynwch and back to the start of the walk.
