Steel Fell from the Travellers Rest

A Lake District walk by Local Expert Dave Chick that ascends the lower central fell of Steel Fell in the Lake District Central Fells.

Starting from the village of Grasmere between Ambleside and Keswick, this is an out and back ascent to Steel Fell, which is 553m in height. We’d class this as one of the easier fell walks in the Lake District, but still covers some rough ground and should be classed as such.

Dave says of the ascent to Steel Fell from Grasmere:

The route to the summit is more or less a straight line, right up a great spur called Cotra Breast which gives a wonderful view down into Dunmail Raise and along the valley into Grasmere
