Rydal Water Easy Walk from White Moss Common

This is an easy, flat low level  Lake District walking route along Rydal Water starting from the White Moss Common car park between Rydal and Grasmere.

Rydal Water lies near Rydal, between Grasmere and Ambleside and while it’s one of the smallest lakes at barely a kilometre in length, it’s undoubtedly one of the most popular. While partly due to convenience, being located in a prime Lake District location, it’s mainly due to it being a beautiful location and the links with Wordsworth as well as Thomas De Quincey and Hartley Coleridge who used to live in Nab Cottage overlooking Rydal Water from the north. Two properties related to Wordsworth also lie on the same shores – Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount – which can be visited by extending this walk via the Coffin Route between Ambleside and Grasmere to create a circuit of Rydal Water.

The route takes an excellent path along the south shore of Rydal Water, on the lower slopes of Loughrigg Fell as far as Steps End before returning the same way. You can visit Rydal Cave as a short diversion, a man made cave that’s nevertheless quite striking. Alfred Wainwright  was convinced that you could fit the entire population of Ambleside in there! And who are we to argue with Wainwright!

Return as suggested above via the Coffin Route to complete a satisfying circular walk around Rydal Water
