Roseberry Topping and Cook’s Monument Walk

Roseberry Topping is a prominent and well known landmark on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It’s only 320m high, but as is often the case with these lower summits is a magnificent viewpoint.

The name, which makes me think of some seventies desert mix, is derived from Othensberg, or Odin’s Hill. It was named by the Vikings as they believed it was sacred and so dedicated it to Odin. Over time, this changed to Roseberry and Topping is a local variation on ‘Top’.

This route also takes in Captaion Cook’s Monument on Easby Moor – which is 4 metres higher than Roseberry Topping.
