Porth Colmon to Tudweiliog Wales Coastal Path Circular Walk

This is a good half days’ walk along the Wales Coastal Path, either starting off from Porth Colmon, or Porth Towyn near Tudwieliog.  As it involves a good distance on country lanes, you might be better off with two cars and whether you want to start off or finish off on the lanes will determine your starting point.

WARNING – This walk crosses the beaches where possible, but be aware of the tides! You could easily become stranded with no easy way to climb back up. Follow the cliff top paths where there’s any doubt.

1 Start from Porth Colmon, following the minor road back towards Llangwnnadl, past the chapel and houses, before turning left at around 1.5km at what amounts to a major road junction at these parts!

2 Follow the country lane for 6km until you reach Porth Towyn. It provides decent open views, and is an easy enough start to the walk. You’ll pass a car park at Pont yr Afon Fawr, which provides an alternative starting point to the walk, if parking’s an issue.

3 At Porth Towyn, there’s a shack and a caravan park – with Porth Towyn clearly signposted. So it’s through the caravans, before finally descending to the beach and some proper coastal walking.

4 The path and route is clear and obvious all the way to Porth Colmon, but just allow an extra hour or so for exploring the terrain! On the headland between Porth Llydan and Porth Ysgaden, there’s a well used (private) shack with unrivalled sea views, as well as the incongruous remains of an old house looking out in the opposite direction. This provides a useful windbreak!

5 The path undulates towards Porth Gwylan, and then Porth Ychain; both explorable shingle beaches on the way.

6 The path passes along the rugged Penrhyn Melyn, before finally descending to the sandy Traeth Penllech on the final section of the walk. While it may be sandy, there are still remains of stacks and rocks that protrude like giant teeth from the ground.

7 Reascend the coastal path at SH203 343, which will return you to Porth Colmon after around 1km.
