Mynydd Cilgwyn from y Fron

This short route is ideal if you’ve got an hour or so to spare, or want a reasonably easy trail run with less than 100m ascent. The route starts from Y Fron, which is no more than a collection of houses with a stupendous views even before starting! This route wasn’t expected to deliver much, in fact the last time I walked this way it was just next to the county landfill. However, I was pleasantly surprised and the route is recommended on a fine evening for the views and the sunset.

1 Start from the ‘green’ in the centre of Y Fron and head for the road signed as Tai Bryn Twrog. Mynydd Cilgwyn can be seen in the photo below.

2 Continue along the road, past the row of houses (Bryntwrog Terrace on the map) and onto the track. You need to follow this for 600m until you reach a wall and an obvious path leads on uphill before the track passes through a  stone wall.

3 The ascent is over before you know it, and the reward really is far too generous for the effort needed to get here! Views stretch from Anglesey to Mynydd Mawr, Nantlle Ridge and down the Llyn Peninsula. It’s highly advised to try and get up here for sunset, but as we were running we didn’t have the camera kit to do it justice.

4 There are paths leading down in all directions it seems, all of which will bring you onto the track that loops around this hill, but we took the one direct to Cilgwyn, roughly SW towards Yr Eifl hills.

5 At Cilgwyn, keep right and along a wall behind the houses rather than taking the tarmac road. It’s easy to find yourself being tempted to follow the paths that contour, but these lead into deep gorse as we discovered to our cost! Much better is to follow the wall as far as the road, and then the path right towards a cottage.

6 The path contours around quite obviously for a steady 1.4km, avoiding any paths that lead onto the road. This brings you back onto the track you set off on, just beyond Bryntwrog Terrace, turn left and you’ll be back at the start in 600m.
