Walk up Moel Eilio From Waunfawr

The walk up Moel Eilio is a popular route with locals, and this is the easiest walk up. The route up Moel Eliio from Waunfawr starts from a car park above Waunfawr, or you can walk in from the village if you wanted to double the distance. We recommend extending the walk over the range and either returning to the start, or descending to Snowdon Ranger YH and getting a bus back to the start.

NOTE that the access road may not be suitable for most cars – if in doubt, park in the village and walk up.

1 Set off from the car park (beware that the access road is narrow and has deteriorated recently – be careful!) and follow a path along the edge of the slate tips away from the road you’ve approached. There are some stones placed at regular intervals here for some reason, possibly to stop campers or anyone driving this way.

2 The track continues under the slate tips and joins a good wide track. You can follow this to the wall and turn right, or continue along a faint path directly to the gate in the wall.

3 Pass through the gate, and turn right along the eroded footpath. There’s more than just walker damage along here, and it was unfortunately damaged further by a Land Rover films shoot a few months back with the damage still apparent.

4 The path undulates, mainly upwards, until you reach a fence and a stile. The path is badly eroded here, so keep to the path rather than widening it (but it’s a bit late for that I suppose).

5 This section is much steeper, but over soon enough when you reach a further fence with a stile. There’s a huge gap so you can ignore the redundant stile and pass on through.

6 Within no time, you’ll be at the summit shelter. This is a huge construction and a welcome respite in foul weather. If it’s fine, then the views from here are extensive and well worth the effort!

From the Summit of Moel Eilio – we suggest continuing along the ridge to walk along the entire ridge by following this route – Moel Eilio circular walk From Llanberis.
