Walk up Middle Fell, Seatallan and Buckbarrow from Wastwater

The Lake District Wainwright of Seatallan, along with it’s lower neighbouring Middle Fell and Buckbarrow, have the unfortunate task of persuading the walker to climb them rather than being drawn to the bright lights of Wasdale Head and all that mountainy goodness surrounding it. If you’ve got a half day left after climbing one of the big walks in the area such as Scafell Pike, Mosedale Horseshoe or Great Gable, then it comes highly recommended.

This circular walk starts from Buckbarrow near Nether Wasdale, a steady ascent bringing you first to the summit of Middle Fell. Lying directly across Wastwater to the Scafells, the views are worth the intial slog. A grassy ridge is then followed to bring you to the grassy lump that is Seatallan. There are still extensive views – but dominated by the summit’s grassy summit, an ideal location for a summer picnic.

The walk returns to the start with a descent over Buckbarrow, passing a tall upright cairn that was built by the legendary Joss Naylor. Visit Dave Chick’s website on the link below for full information on that, including meeting the man himself. Buckbarrow is more of a collection of knolls than a proper summit, though you’d think it was it’s own summit when viewed from below. It’s a fine viewpoint, if you can find the proper summit. A final descent returns you to the start, and with Nether Wasdale a few minutes down the road The Strands Hotel and the Screes Inn make a fine ending to the day!
