Llyn Llywelyn from Rhyd Ddu

A short trip around Beddgelert Forest from Rhyd Ddu that’s suitable as an easy family walk, trail run or easy mountain bike ride.

The Route

1 Start off on the Lon Gwyrfai from Rhyd Ddu. You can start opposite the Rhyd Ddu Path car park, or from the Cwellyn Arms you can follow the minor road towards Penygroes and you can join the path where the road turns sharply right.

Aran Circuit (6 of 28)

2 Follow the easy trail across the causeway alongside Llyn y Gader, past some quarry buildings and along the pleasant lakeside with extensive views towards Snowdon.

3 The path enters the forest, and widens slightly into forestry tracks. Ignore a turning to the right and within a minute or so you’ll find another signpost for Beddgelert to the left.

4 This takes you over the WHR and then surprisingly to the main road, and a long straight stretch towards the Forestry Commission Car park (so watch out for cars on this section and keep following the signposts).

5 The path soon crosses an old bridge – Pont Rhyd Ceffylau – Horse Ford Bridge or similar – and then a crossing over the WHR. Directly ahead is a narrow track that’s slightly shorter, if a bit wet, or keep left and turn right up a forestry track at SH569 496.

Aran Circuit (12 of 28)

6 Follow this track, ignoring the first cross roads, continuing uphill, and you’ll soon be at Llyn Llywelyn just past a second set of cross roads. At these you can either turn left and then cross the dam, or continue ahead. If you’re on a leisurely trip, this makes an ideal lunch stop. There are even picnic benches. If you’re on a run, it’s still worth stopping a few minutes here.

7 Return to the crossroads in 6 (the nearest to the lake), turning left. You can follow the forestry track by crossing the first cross roads, pass a junction to the left, take the left hand fork when the route splits and ignore a final junction to your left. You’ll be back at the signpost mentioned in 3 above, where you retrace your footsteps to the start.
