Sgwd Henrhyd Falls and Nant Llech Walk
The Sgwd Henrhyd Falls are the highest waterfalls in South Wales with a drop of 27 metres and are also known as the entrance to Batman’s Batcave in the Dark Knight Rises. Like all waterfalls, they’re best viewed after a period of prolonged rain when they will be at their most impressive, or those exceptionally rare times when they’re frozen (once in a decade perhaps!!). While not technically in the area, it’s often regarded as being part of the Waterfall Country – an area of over a dozen waterfalls between Pontneddfechan and Ystradfellte in the south western part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This area also includes well known waterfalls such as Sgwd Gwladus and Sgwd yr Eira on the the Mellte, Hepste, Nedd Fechan and Pyrddin rivers.
This is a short walk that starts from near Coelbren on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park that takes you initially to the impressive Henrhyd Falls via a riverside path alongside the Nant Llech. With care, it is possible to walk behind the waterfalls, but this isn’t recommended due to falling rocks – so take care! The route continues ahead through the Nant Llech, with the option of returning the same way, or follow a country lane back to the start.
