Fall in Love with Ynys Llanddwyn

This is an easy to follow walking route to the beautiful Ynys Llanddwyn on Anglesey’s west coast. The walk takes you along possibly the most beautiful beach on the island, with an alternative walk via the forestry plantation if you find the sand gets in your sandals.

Ynys Llanddwyn is associated with the Welsh patron saint of love – Santes Dwynwen, and the remains of her church can still be seen on the island (3rd gallery image below). Many Welsh speakers celebrate her feast day on the 25th of January as opposed to the more commercialised St Valentine. Read more about her on Wikipedia.

The Route

1. The route starts at the car park in Newborough forest. You need to leave the carpark towards the sea, where there is a narrow sandy path that brings you out on the shore. You can also follow the Blue Boot waymarkers and follow the forest track if you wished.

2. The island is now clearly visible to your right, and a short walk along the beach will bring you up to the island. Before you get onto the island, there is a shelter with a map showing the main paths. The easier option is straight ahead along a wide track. More challenging, but not hard, is the path to the left that follows the coastline – which we’ll return on. They’re both way-marked with a blue boot.

3. The main path is clear and easy to follow – the blue boot way marked are rather unnecessary. You will pass a ruined church to your right and before long you’ll arrive at the old Pilot’s Cottages, and the lighthouse at the end of Ynys Llanddwyn.

4. You can visit whichever landmark you want, probably both, before returning back past the large cross.

5. You can follow the wide track back to the shelter again if you wished.  A better walk takes you right, and follows the coastline of Ynys Llanddwyn for much better views. There’s also a path to the left along the coast, but it does have an awkward descent at the end down a sandy and polished rock gully.

6. You now need to retrace your steps back to the car park along the beach, or you can enter the forest (you will see cars parked there) and follow the forestry track right to return to the car park.
