Easy Walk between Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge

This easy walk between the villages of Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge in the Lake District’s Great Langdale has sections of trail and path that’s suitable for all abilities. The path between Elterwater and Skelwith Force is reasonably accessible – with flat trails, while the trail between Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge is a fully accessible footpath for all.

The views across Elterwater to the unmistakable Langdale Pikes are surely the high point of the first section that initially follows the river of Great Langdale Beck from the village and continues parallel to Elterwater rather than hugging the lakeside. It’s edges are reedy, and so not as easy to get to as some of the other lakes.

The walking route finishes off by taking you past Skelwith Force and over the distinctive Woodburn Bridge before you need to turn around at the village of Skewith Bridge. Of course, you’ve also got the villages of Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge at either end of this easy walk that can be explored and you can easily spend half a day or more on this reasonably short walk. The distance quoted above assumes that you’ll be walking the route both out and back.

If you’re looking for a more accessible track, then you need to start from Skelwith Bridge, with the accessible section taking you as far as the Woodburn Bridge.
