Short Wilderness Walk to Cwm Bochlwyd

This is only a few KM long and 300m ascent, but a steady bimble for a sunday afternoon to an excellent viewpoint. It’s worth dragging your picnic hamper up here on a summer’s day, enjoy the amphitheatre of the Cwm and just chill out!

1 You can start the route anywhere between Ogwen and one of the lay-bys on the side of the A5. At the layby, take the stile across the wall – and follow the good path steeply uphill.

2 The path soon, thankfully, levels off and reaches the stream of Nant Bochlwyd. You follow this for a while, resisting the urge to cross too soon, passing some wonderful little cascades before finally crossing higher up as the path peters out.

3 You need to be heading for the clear path that you can see ascending next to the stream further up, and it really is a bit of choose your own route! If you’re expecting a motorway style path, don’t bother. This may be short, but there’s nothing sweet about it!

4 Once you reach the path, follow it steeply uphill for a few 100m. It’s rather eroded in places, and care is definitely needed in places, but this just adds to the fun!

5 The path vanishes once the path levels out, but you just need to weave between the rocks and the lake will soon appear. The views here are impressive, with sunset being a good time to arrive (leaving enough time to descend safely of course!!). Tryfan obviously dominates the vista, but the northern cliffs of Glyder Fach and Y Gribin finish the scene off nicely.

Llyn Bochlwyd also looks like Australia from above. If you can’t see it, then this image makes it perfectly obvious.

6 Descend the same way, but rather than heading cross country directly to the start, continue on the good track. This path soon joins the Cwm Idwal path, which usually provides a contrast in the number of people you’ll see.
