A Stratford-upon-Avon Ramble
From the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, you can walk easily and quickly and find yourself rapidly in the surrounding countryside.
This easy walk or trail run can be started from the RSC theatre or from the Greenway Cycletrack carpark, with more information on that here – Stratford Greenway.
The Route
1 – Starting off at the RSC Theatre, keeping it to your right walk along the River Avon. You can keep on the river as far as, and including the Holy Trinity Church – the burial place of William Shakespeare.
2 – Follow the path around the church, through the graveyard and turn left onto the quiet Mill Lane.
3 – Continue along Mill Lane, past an apartment block and a pedestrian track dead ahead that leads once more to the riverbank.
4 – You’re now following the Monarch’s Way, though only for a few kilometres rather than the 990 km of its full length. You’ll need to pass under neath the road and follow the path along the river rather than the cycle-path turning right – that leads directly to the Greenway and will be the return route.
5 – Follow a pleasant, grassy path for 1.5 km along the banks of the Avon, keeping an eye out for narrowboats. If you’re running then you’ll easily outpace them, I did today at any rate, and I’m not exactly Mo Farah.
6 – When you reach the old railway bridge – Stannals Bridge though not named on the OS map, you’ll follow a short path up to join the Greenway which provides an easy route back. Take this cycletrack right.
7 – Follow the Greenway for about 1km, whereupon you’ll pass the 34644 Carriages Cafe and a large car park. Keep to the right of the car park on the obvious cycletrack and this will return you to point 4.
8 – Cross the footbridge across the Avon, and follow the footpath through pleasant parkland and cross the Avon at the Tramway Bridge to return to the start.
