Rab Vapour-Rise Jacket

I bought this about a month ago when the zip went on my North Face soft shell. The North Face had served me well for the last couple of years, but I decided to go for the Rab on the recommendation of a friend.

This Vapour-rise jacket claims to be warm and wind resistant, but breathable at the same time. On a damp but mild day in early September I was able to test it out for the first time while hiking in the Lake District. Wearing just a t-shirt and the Rab, I thought it might be a bit too “breathable” and I’d be freezing by the time I scaled Great End. It turned out that I was pleasantly surprised, the soft shell wicked sweat away, keeping me cool on the way up but warm on the way back down. Keeping me dry through the odd shower it struck the perfect balance between being weather proof and being breathable.

The only downside I can think of is that it was my usual size but a little tight, particularly around the shoulders, and since I haven’t been munching on any extra cakes I can only think that it is a flaw in the sizing of the jacket itself. Apart from that slight downside, overall the soft shell beats my old North Face hands down.

I’m glad it’s not just me that finds Rab clothing a little tight. I always have to buy their clothing in large, when usually I’m a medium.
