Paramo Mountain Pull On top

The Paramo Mountain Top is designed specifically to be worn with their waterproofs. The cut is snug, and fits well beneath something like an Aspira Jacket for winter use. The more expensive Mountian Vent top even has zipped vents corresponding with the ones on the outside jacket for cooling down to the skin.

You can wear this directly next to the skin, and it’s comfortable enough. I just prefer a much thinner base-layer, even in winter when I’d rather use a mid layer as extra insulation. As a fleece midlayer, it is rather difficult to fault the garment technically. It’s reasonably windproof, warm and a quality item.

The Parameta S reversible fabric means that the top can be worn with the plushy side out or in. It’s designed to be warmer with the plush on the inside, but unfortunately looks too much like a 70s tracksuit for my liking when worn with the plush to the outside. In that configuration it’s meant to be cooler, but I haven’r been able to tell the difference.

If you do start to get a little warm then there’s a deep chest zip you can open and the cuffs are poppered allowing you to roll the sleeves up while maintaining a reasonably close fit. Next to this is the useful chest pocket, suitable for small items you need at hand.

The only question is would you pay over £60 for a fleece? It’s certainly at the upper range of the market, and doesn’t lend itself well as a casual top for use down the pub. Overall, if you can get your mitts on these for a decent discount (I bought two half price a few years back) then they’re probably as good a midlayer as you’ll get if your main concern is performance. Just don’t wear them inside out if you’re off to the pub, unless you like that sort of thing.

The newer versions are made from a lighter parameta fabric and significantly lighter. If you want a no nonsense mid layer or heavy duty base-layer, then this is a workhorse and will last years. The top looks okayish in the images, but while it’s down to personal taste, I really don’t like it reversed!
