Hill Walking A – Z Part 3

Here’s part 3 of our A-Z of hill walking, with a distinctly Snowdonian, and ranty, feel.

M is for Mount. What should only precede Snowdon if you’re an estate agent or a tourist. The ‘don’ part of Snowdon also means ‘mountain’, so adding ‘mount’ to the name is rather redundant. Those familiar with the Lake District will understand this fully, such as when ‘lake’ is added before the names of Windermere for example.

N is for Never. As in, when Mount should precede Snowdon. Just in case you weren’t listening the first time.

O is for Orange. See Decompose.

P – is for Pen Y Gwryd – the definitive mountaineer’s pub. No visit to Snowdonia can be complete with out a drink from its hallowed pumps.

Q – is for Queue. What you’ll end up in, in July, on Snowdon Summit. Not to mention the ‘caff’. There’s usually a selection of different types here, a generous mixing of those who’ve come up by train as well as those you really can’t understand how they managed to make it up at all. The image below is from 2007, so it’s missing the guy taking photos with his iPad.

R – Ron Hills. The leg-wear of legends. It is a fact that nobody wearing  Ron Hill Tracksters can walk any slower than 6kph and never, ever slow down when they start going uphill. There are rumours that this is a property of the garment itself, that the wearer will magically speed up on the mountain. But woe to he who wears the enchanted leggings as if he is not worthy, he will be pushed to his limit and end up spent and useless.
