High5 EnergySource Drink Review

Sometimes, when we’re on a hard trip we might just need a bit more calories during the day. That’s the idea behind the High5 EnergySource Drinks. It’s available in Citrus, Orange, Summer Fruits and Tropical Samba as either 12x 50g sachets or a serious 2.2 KG bottle.

While this 47g sachet provides an impressive 180cals and makeup 500ml it doesn’t really impress with flavour. It’s rather powdery, and you certainly wouldn’t drink this for the taste. It’s aimed squarely at improving performance rather than the taste-buds, which puts it in the serious athlete category. You’re recommended to use just under two sachets an hour (90g worth) which is one way of making you drink enough fluids!

Neither does it mix well – with a fair bit of agitation in the bottle needed to get the solids out. That means you have to use this with a shaker bottle, with hydration bladders or flexible bottles being little use. The powder is very light, meaning it goes everywhere while you try and pour it in. So you will need to take care, easy enough in the kitchen but less so when you’re out on the move.

If perhaps I was participating in a serious endurance event, where it’s more than a matter of calorie intake, I might see an improvement in my performance. As it stands, I need something that’s going to make me want to drink more by having a pleasant flavour and is easy to mix. I would much rather take some of the High5 zero tablets for hydration, and obtain any extra calories from elsewhere such as energy gels. If I did need a calorie laden drink then I’d have to go with the Mountain Fuel tropical or Blackcurrant drinks which taste far too good and mix easily enough in a flexible bottle.

What the Manufacturer says:

EnergySource is a new generation sports drink for use during exercise. It contains a carbohydrate formulation of maltodextrin and fructose in a ratio of 2:1 and key electrolytes. Many of the world’s leading event organisers and Pro athletes choose award-winning EnergySource for success in the toughest endurance events.
