Fancy a proper trail running challenge?

If the thought of running a mere 42km marathon and not much else sounds like something you’d do as a stock run, then you may be up for a bit more of a challenge. The Dragons’ Back Run was run for the first and only time back in 1992 and involves a 354.0556km run (only given in miles on the site and this is what Google says it is) over 5 days  from Conwy in North Wales to Carreg Cennen in the south. Not only that, but there’s an eye-watering 15,000m ascent over the course, working out at 3000m ascent and 70km running each day – the equivalent of three Snowdon Races and a half marathon thrown in for good measure. If that doesn’t put you off, then you’ll be glad to know that the second race has been organised for 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the original.

Touted on their site as

the toughest mountain running event ever organised. Certainly, this is not a challenge for the faint hearted.

I certainly wouldn’t disagree with that! Their own page on training states simply the enigmatic and onomatopoeic “arsdhnhgdh” – surely the word for that feeling you get in the fleeting moment before you realise you’ve run uphill a little too fast and that your last meal was on an all day return, not a single….

Competitors wishing to take on this incredible challenge will be fully supported throughout with tented accommodation, breakfast and evening meals provided. There will also be hot drinks, cakes and refreshments available as you finish each day/stage. Competitors will be able to access their Resupply Bag at one support point each day, whilst their Overnight Bag will be transported to the campsite.

Spectacular mountain scenery and a journey of discover will greet competitors each day as the traverse the mountains of Wales. On completion of this epic five-day race, all the competitors and support crew will share a celebratory feast before return transport takes everyone back to Conwy in North Wales.

Due to the complex event logistics, places are limited. So, if you’d like to take part please don’t delay entering!

Entries are now open, from £500, and close on 12th August 2012. So what you waiting for? If you miss this one, you’ll have 20 years to train up for the next one, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking by it…
