Extremeties Women’s Mountain Mitt

If you suffer from cold hands then it can make winter walking a miserable experience. So when we received a pair of super warm Women’s Mountain Mitts by Extremeties, I just had to ask one of the Mud and Routes walking buddies to give these a spin. Eleri finds that her hands are always cold, and is the ideal reviewer for this bit of kit (nothing to do with her being our only female reviewer!).

This is what she thought…
The Extremeties Women’s Mountain Mitt is a waterproof winter mitt that’s advertised as being designed for those who feel the cold. As I reckon that I’ve borderline Reynard’s, which would explain why I feel the cold so much. Having tried all sorts of different gloves, including liner gloves as an extra layer, I’ve never got my hands warmer than tolerable.

The mitts were quite comfortable to wear, but to be honest, the most important thing for me is that they actually keep my hands warm. That must be down to the PrimaLoft  insulation as they feel quite thick and quilted. I thought this was pretty amazing considering they only had 13g in them, but then re-read the box and found that they were still in imperial and it was actually 368g of PrimaLoft, presumably 184g in each mitt. I usually have to wear gloves most of the winter, and even then my hands rarely feel warm, but tolerable. The main test came on a cool and damp day in February when it was a combination of rain and sleet. Normally I would have been suffering, but I don’t think that my hands have been so warm on a winter walk. The fact that they’re mitts makes them warmer. I used to have to clench my fist inside my regular gloves in order to keep them from freezing.

They functioned well on the walks I’ve done recently, and while I’ve not been out in torrential rain they’ve beaded well in the rain I have had as expected from a waterproof mitt. They’re adjustable both at the cuff and with a strap  across the back of the hand, and they have a handy pull loop to help removal. They’ve got a girly ‘flowery’ pattern in a grippy gel on the palm, which is the only thing stopping the guys from nicking these (though it usually takes a lot more to stop them than that!).

These mitts would be suitable for serious winter walking, ideally with a decent liner as with the PrimaLoft insulation you can’t do much with these things on your hands other than hold an axe or pull a zip with a large toggle attached. For the first time, my hands are warm and comfortable in winter, so not only is it easy for me to give these a 5 out of 5, I feel rather unkind that I can’t give them a Six.

I only wish that I could drive in them!
