All I want for Christmas 2 Garmin Forerunner 610

Garmin Forerunner 610 GPS Sportswatch with HRM £359.99
Buying a GPS watch was the best thing I ever did for my running. Some people are happy to run to time, but I like to know how far I’ve gone on a run and it really is the thing that motivates me. What’s more, I can load this onto my computer at home, see where I’ve been and upload to the site.

Being the once proud owner of a bulky Forerunner 305 (which was hacked to bits, but still working – see here!), that has since packed in, I’d appreciate a lighter watch that does everything that did without looking as if I’ve walked off the set of a low budget 70’s sci-fi show. The Garmin 110 (review to follow) that I bought to replace it might be a decent little workhorse, but it just isn’t shiny enough!

This does all that, and transfers information wirelessly to your PC. The only thing it doesn’t do  is to provide a Grid Reference – which is a really poor move from Garmin’s end. The reasoning being that it isn’t a navigational GPS, even if you can load tracks. Even so, I’d like to be the one to decide that as this would be an ideal quick reference watch for long hill trips. As it’s always there, it’s much more convenient than the handheld GPS that’s probably in the bottom of the pack.

  1. Nice- does it come with easily transferable basemaps? we travel quite a bit and still use bulky GPS because transferring basemaps is done on a SD chip
