All I want for Christmas 15 Montane Spektr Smock

The Montane Spektr Smock is just too kool for zips. If you’ve had enough with zips and tend to get them caught in everything, well not quite everything (think Something About Mary), then you’ll welcome the simplicity of the Spektre.

Not only is it rather alternative in lacking a zip, it also uses the hard to find eVent fabric, which despite what the multinational marketing machine want you to believe, is at the very least as good as Gore-Tex. It also weighs in at a very reasonable 210g, which may not be the lightest, but is one of the most fully featured technical smocks available at such a ridiculously low weight.

Priced at £180, it’s neither cheap or at the higher end of the market.

eVent® 3-layer fabric allows the Spektr to handle demanding weather conditions and offer market leading levels of breathability

It does this by, obviously lacking the zip which clearly helps reduce weight, but also by removing certain features such as the peak on the hood; suggesting that you wear it with a peaked cap instead. The zip is replaced by three hoops that simply hook to close, a method known as the Tornado roll closure system, a simple method but one I’d like to see in action to believe. Neither are there any pockets, but at these lower echelons of smock weights you have to lose some functionality. While a map pocket is useful, you’ll need to find somewhere else to keep your odds and sods on the hill. This isn’t always a bad thing as you can easily find yourself filling any pocket to capacity with junk that you could and probably should store elsewhere.

Our Spektr is the the post, and we’ll post a review in the new year.
