All I want for Christmas 12 Klymit Sleeping Mat

Again, in our quest to get the lightest and the best, this is the true lightweight when it comes to sleeping mats. Not only is it comfortable, surprisingly so, it weight very little and takes hardly any space in the pack.

At first glance, it looks like a rather unimaginative attempt at creating a balloon creature of some sort. You think that there’s no way this will support your weight and you may as well take a Karrimat. But if you take the plunge then you’ll be pleasantly surprised as to just how comfy this seemingly unsubstantial jumble of inflatable tubes is in use.

“At [258g] the Inertia X Frame is the world’s lightest, most compact, and most technically advanced camping pad available. Designed with body mapping technology it gives you support and comfort where you need it and not where you don’t.” – Klymit

The reason it is so comfortable is that it’s mapped to the shape of a sleeping body (and presumably a dead one, but we didn’t try that out)- with padding only at the points that you actually need it. Now we won’t lie to you – it’s still not as comfortable as a full sized down mat – but that’s not the point. This is the lightest full sized inflating sleeping mat out there, and it takes up no space in your pack. It was the only way we could get a proper night’s sleep on our ultralight challenge as the only other options were either too bulky or heavy.

As an added bonus, removing bits of the mat means that your sleeping bag gets to loft up even when it’s underneath you, as opposed to being flattened down with traditional mats. This means that in theory, you’ll get a bit more warmth from your bag, and that the sleeping mat can be lighter as a result.

Bottom line is – this got a full 5 star rating in our August review as it’s the lightest and most innovative of it’s kind currently out there. While we did think that the price was rather ‘inflated’ at the time, that’s what you pay for cutting edge technology.

  1. Just wanna test it in these arctic conditions of Northern Norway … A hard breed and harsh conditions … sleep well or suffer !

  2. I’ve been thinking of trying this out with my winter bag on a trip next week, though the conditions are probably going to be tropical in comparison to Northern Norway!
