5 Things: Prepare for Snow!

You may think we’ve finally lost it but now’s the time to buy all the stuff you need for winter! Following the heavy snow last year, you may remember the difficulty in getting hold of those essential items that you didn’t think of until the white stuff had fallen! Here are some thing that you may need to get your mitts on now before everyone gets the same idea!!

1 – Kahtoola Microspikes. This clever piece of kit will let you walk to work in the snow and ice, take you over patchy ice in the hills or let you run like a bad ass mutha…[snip] in the snow with all who see you thinking you’re mad. These are essential once the snow compacts and turns to ice and will fit onto trail shoes or running shoes or even onto proper walking boots if you’re lucky with the sizing.

2 – Snow Shovel. You’ll need one of these if you elect to go snow holing. Of course, you’ll decide to go snow holing just as everyone else buys all the shovels within 20 km. So get one now, before it’s too late. While Grivel do an excellent snow shovel that fits onto the Munro Ice Axe, you can get a cheap and cheerful one from Garant in B&Q for around £11 that comes apart and is easily stowable in the pack. You heard it here first, and we’ll be reviewing it soon, even if we don’t get any snow!

3 – Studded Snow Tyres for your bike. I couldn’t get any of these last year, and by the time they were in stock, the snow had all gone. Schwalbe Snow Stud Tyres are among the best ones, if we can get hold of them!!

4 – Move to the hills so you can’t get into work and take a snow day instead 😉 I know  you’ll need to take a holiday, but it’s better than sitting at work as you’re the only one who can make it in thinking you’d rather be out walking/mtb/running in the snow. Otherwise, once it gets to the weekend the snow will inevitably have gone.

5- Rock Salt. So you can get the car out of the drive in order to get to the start of the walk!
