Fuel Your 10 k Hours – Liquid Breakfast Review

It’s said that to become an expert at anything, you’ll need to practice for 10,000 hours, hence the name – 10k Hours. However, about the only thing that stuck in my head from teacher training was the quote from my tutor that some people have 20 years’ experience, while other have one year’s experience 20 times. In other words, some people never learn (never mind 10,000 hours practice!)

The liquid breakfast is meant as a breakfast on the go, and packs between 241 (café latte) to 290 (chocolate) calories in each 330ml carton with 20g of protein and less than 1% fat. All well and good, so what about the taste test?

Strawberry – This has a rather wan colour, which I thought might well be a sign of a more natural flavour. I was to be sorely disappointed as it was more like a barely strawberry flavoured milk of magnesia. It had a chalky texture, if not taste, and while not unpleasant, nothing compared to other strawberry flavoured meal replacement drinks. I expect that they’ll taste somewhat similar to a milkshake, with varying degrees of chemically / artificial / natural flavour and at least this bucked that trend, just not in a good way.

Chocolate – this one wasn’t much better than the strawberry, and as I’ve recently been using both Matrix and PhD chocolate flavoured diet whey that is palatable enough, I’d expect this to be similar. It felt chalky and tasted slightly medicinal or chemically, nowhere near the flavour I’m used to.

These are clearly sold as a convenience food, and we’d avoid the strawberry for certain, and think twice about the chocolate. Some may argue that it’s not down to the flavour, but I think that if it’s not pleasant, I’m not going to drink it. Other brands taste sufficiently fine, so we found this product to be disappointing overall . We certainly wouldn’t need to try this for 10,000 hours before making that decision.
