Building the most comprehensive UK database of free quality walking routes isn’t a one man job. That’s why Mud and Routes has it’s specially selected Local Experts programme. Why not get to know the team?

Derek Flack

Derek lives in Ballynahinch, County Down. He is a frequent visitor to the nearby Mourne Mountains and often travels further afield throughout Ireland in search of superior walking venues with a preference for quiet, unspoilt areas. He is a volunteer ranger with Outdoor Recreation Northern Ireland and audits several walks listed on WalkNI.

Emma Knipe

Based in the Lake District and with frequent trips to Snowdonia, Emma spends most days in the mountains. She splits her time between leading group hikes, volunteering with the National Trust, mountain biking, hiking with the dog and planning the next adventure.

Ian Tupman

Ian lives In Ardrossan and being only a fifty five minutes ferry crossing to Brodick, the Isle of Arran is his ‘back yard’. He knows the mountains of the north of the island well and has walked every permutation of routes over the various summits. He is now spending more time further north exploring the Cairngorms, the far north-west and the mountains of the west of Scotland.

James McKeown

James McKeown Bio

James lives in the leafy Surrey suburbs with his wife and son and can often be found taking in nature amongst the Surrey Hills, with its multitude of Rights of Way paths. Being a northerner, a native Liverpudlian, James cut his hillwalking teeth in the Peak District and Snowdonia in the 1980s which ignited a love of wilder places. He is a family man who nonetheless loves time alone in the hills and has recently discovered the joys of wild camping, and vlogging his adventures onto You Tube.

Nia Lloyd Knott

Nia lives on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast in South Wales and works as a guide leading sightseeing tours and walking holidays across Wales. Nia loves interpreting the landscape, and always looks to include wildlife, geological and historical interest on her walks. When not working, you’ll find her out walking with her twin daughters and one-eyed golden retriever, always on the lookout for hidden places and outdoor swimming spots.

Rik Henderson

Based out of Shrewsbury Shropshire, Rik spends most of his free time across the border into Wales, primarily in Snowdonia. A keen walker and explorer who is on track to completing the Top 100 mountains in Wales. It’s not the walking itself he enjoys most about the outdoors, but just being in the mountains. Taking on these challenges enables him to travel to remote, quiet areas and away from the crowds, those are his favourite mountain days.
