Scarpas are great boots, two of may main walking companions use them, and they do awesome winter boots but they just don't fit. Couldn't agree more about the warmth that Gore-Tex provides, it basically means that I won't use these on warm days when I'll use a pair of lightweight Inov8s instead. Even if they're GoreTex, they're comfortable all year round.

I just replaced The North Face Jannu II GTX with a pair of Scarpa SL Activ B1's - I tried on the Burma Pros and they were actually far more comfortable but I broke my ankle years ago and found the Scarpas gave me more support. I also get really sweaty feet so thought I'd take a break from Gore-Tex!

I love that track - it's the nearest 'green lane' to home. As you say, take the easy way and miss out on the view, or the hard climb from Waun and get the glorious view!

I've done it from the Kate Roberts memorial as a run a few times - downhill all the way!

The route I like is Caernarfon to Waunfawr Station and then turn West to Bontnewydd (via Braich Moel Smytho) and return via Lon Eifion. If I had a GPS I'd post a map. The route is easier in reverse but you miss out on a glorious view over Anglesey from the green lane descent from Braich Moel Smytho. The climb up from Waunfawr railway station is a challange to say the least, but can be ridden by those who are moderately fit and have a good range of gears.

Have been to this bothy several times, met with both types of dwellers too. Amazed by the bunks and rug, they were no longer there in mid March. No doubt used as fuel in the woodburner - such a shame.

OK think I might now understand how to get the stove alight with minimum effort, having the kettle on the fire basin is essential, and key is in the tinder.
