Mynydd Mawr from Rhosgadfan Trip Report

Took the opportunity to do this walk today as there was just a nice dusting of snow, and we intended to fit any walk into the morning.

The Route

If you want a description of this walk – see here.

We set off this morning with some wet slush underfoot, lightly covering the black oozing mud of the Gwyrfai Common which would be forced out with every step. Once across the moor, the going was a lot better as the altitude increased, the temperature dropped and the snow was just a little better underfoot.

We were the first today, and narrowly avoided a walking group who fell behind us.

The views at this point were good, but the weather was closing in and sure enough as we were half way up the cloud came in. I was happy that we’d had any views at all as the forecast was for the weather to improve for the afternoon.

There was nothing to be seen higher up, with the cloud and snow, but fortunately not enough of it to make the going difficult. I’d warmed up a bit too much on the climb and rapidly cooled on the summit without an overlayer, so as it appeared the weather wasn’t going to clear we headed straight back down, passing the large group on the way down.

The return over the moor was again boggy, but at least we were happy that the summit cloud hadn’t cleared as we were half way down. Following the posts of the Four Valley Way, and eventually crossing on some sheep tracks we arrived back on tarmac at the very moment that the sun decided to make an appearance and the summits cleared.
